Rapport launches glossy weekend magazine

Rapport, South Africa’s most-read Afrikaans Sunday newspaper has chosen leading content marketer New Media to relaunch its glossy weekend lifestyle magazine supplement.  The business was awarded to New Media based on its pioneering 2011 launch of i Magazine for City Press, which was South Africa’s first weekend lifestyle magazine supplement.  The glossy, 40-page, new A4 format magazine will debut 4 March nationally as a regular insert in Rapport.

MY TYD is the first glossy magazine for Afrikaans newspaper readers and follows closely in the footsteps of New Media’s i Magazine, an editorial-driven consumer magazine with top tier journalism, timely lifestyle content and fresh design and layout.

The editor is Elmari Rautenbach, the seasoned South African journalist associated with INSIG, Drum Magazine and is currently the National Books Editor for Media24 Afrikaanse daily newspapers.

New Media is dominating the local newspaper market for consumer inserts, following closely on the U.K. trend of major national newspapers like The Guardian and The Sunday Times, whose weekend supplements are high quality consumer magazines rather than traditional newspaper inserts.
Rapport General Manager Barnard Beukman feels that the relaunched My Tyd will add tremendous value to the Rapport offering, “the work we have seen so far from the team at New Media definitely puts My Tyd into a completely new space. The depth of editorial, quality of visuals and richness of the language reflect the quality offering that we know the modern Afrikaans market is looking for. The new My Tyd puts us in a unique space in the South African market and we’re excited to be bringing our readers this amazing extra value.”

“MY TYD will be a breath of fresh air for today’s Afrikaans reader,” says editor Elmari Rautenbach.  “What better way to start the week than with your Sunday coffee and a delicious entertaining read filled with the latest in South African culture and lifestyle – so good you’ll want to stretch it out over the week to come!”

While weeklies are relatively new territory for New Media, the award-winning media company is enjoying its leadership role in driving the resurgence of Sunday newspapers, says New Media’s Business Development Director, .  “This is such an exciting and unexplored arena!  We are thrilled to be revitalising the MY TYD media platform, giving it all the right stuff for reaching ever greater audiences.”

“MY TYD will do for the Afrikaans market what i Magazine did for the English-speaking  market – brighten Sunday mornings with colourful, classy and contemporary reads,” says Nunneley.
