The recent MTN Radio Awards held a number of big wins for Kagiso Broadcasting and radio brands Jacaranda FM, Heart 104.9FM and East Coast Radio.
Between them the stations hauled several of the accolades on offer to commercial stations. Describing the wins as “significant”, Kagiso Broadcasting said it w
as the quality, not the quantity that has kept the company celebrating. Elton Ollerhead, Managing Director of Mediamark, Kagiso Broadcasting’s sales house, agrees. “Through rigorous programming and testing, the stations are proving that they are listening to wha
t their audience and advertisers want. This is confirmed by the recent awards for East Coast Radio, Jacaranda FM and Heart 104.9F
M.”
Heart 104.9FM walked away with Best Day Time presenter, awarded to Saskia Falken and the Best Programme Concept award for its Phat Joe Morning
Show.
East Coast Radio won Best Community Project for its annual Toy Story collection
drive for the children of KwaZulu Natal and Jacaranda FM’s Martin Bester won the coveted “Best Afternoon Drive Show Presenter” award against tough competition.
Kagiso Broadcast
ing COO Nick Grubb said: “As much as we’re a commercial company with commercial radio assets, Kagiso Media is steeped in community upliftment via its brands and shareholding, as demonstrated by the East Coast Radio Toy Story campaign.”
Jacaranda’s General Manager Kevin Fine adds, “The Jacaranda FM drive show has flourished in the last two years and our content represents the
energy and compelling sense of humour that Martin brings to the airwaves.”
Jacaranda FM’s “Double Up” campaign won Best Promotion/Stunt/Event. The promotion was designed to promote time spent listening to the station incentivised by cash prizes and linked to music double-plays. Current breakfast show anchor at Jacaranda FM Rian Van Heerden won the award for best (Commercial) Night Time show for his previous show on the station (“That Show with Rian”).

n
the win Fine said: “He’s an undoubtedly creative force – that’s why he was the right choice for mornings.”
The Jacaranda FM morning show also picked up an indirect endorsement with the win of their technical producer JD Mostert for his
work while at Algoa FM. Mostert was a joint winner of the Best Producer category.
“Overall I am really proud of the teams – everyone nominated, everyone who won of course, and also of the teams behind the scenes in support of our stations. Given we have stated our intent as a group to invest in the best content and the best content people, the nature of the awards we took home on Saturday tell me that we’re already headed in the right direction,” Grubb said.
