This month family interest weekly magazines Huisgenoot, YOU and Drum are listed together at the top of South Africa’s Audit Bureau of Circulations’ (ABC) sales figures released yesterday for the last quarter of 2012. On average Huisgenoot sells 270 310 copies a week, YOU sells 155 125 and Drum sells 118 793.
“Thanks to our readers the three sister titles are the top three magazines in South Africa,” says Izelle Venter, editor-in-chief of Huisgenoot, YOU and Drum. “In this era of choice our history of being the biggest doesn’t contribute to the readers’ choice. How relevant we are each week is the real issue. Our team keeps making sense of our readers’ lives as well as telling stories that make South Africans laugh and cry. Talking to over 6 million people each week is an honour and responsibility we aim to continue for a long, long time.”
The top performer in the Media24 stable is the Afrikaans-language Huisgenoot.
Runner-up in the ABCs is Huisgenoot’s English-language sister magazine, YOU. Last year YOU was voted the Coolest Female Magazine in the Sunday Times Generation Next Brand Survey.
Drum has its roots in the black culture and is fast becoming one of the leaders in its category and has a strong focus on general interest.
